New Dog: Basil

So Sawyer loves loves loves his new dog. The last week of May and part of the first week of June we dog-sat my in-laws dog. Dosh and their dog haven't ever really gotten along very well, but this time was quite a bit better. But for most of the week while dog-sitting the dogs ignored each other and were on opposite ends of the house. All that week though, Dosh was on his very best behavior, but the minute we took their dog home Dosh was sad and started being AWEFUL! So, a few days later after Dosh had run away 3 times and tried to chew everything in sight, Jake and I were talking about it over lunch at Subways. We decided Dosh really really needed a friend. So, we decided to drive up to the shelter on the way home. (It isn't on the way home, but we took the scenic route.) Sawyer loved being at the shelter. He also loved helping choose our new dog. The ones I was leaning towards were all big fluffy dogs, but Jake wasn't a fan of any of them. Jake and I both agreed on a blue heeler (Basil) and Jasmine pit bull. We took both of them out and Basil was so shy and mellow, we liked her a lot. Plus she came over and licked Sawyer and was very gentle with him. He even started patting her head and she was fine with it. Jasmine was really cute and playful. She would have been a LOT more work, but she was really sweet with Sawyer too. The next step was going home to get Dosh to see how he got along with either of them. Jasmine and Dosh's date was first. Dosh was acting really weird with her and very timid. He is never timid around other dogs. He didn't like her trying to play with him or anything. So, that was that. Jasmine was out. Basil (her name then was Sage) came out and Dosh and Basil were disinterested in each other, but they seemed to be fine around each other. So, we paid for her and took her home. We changed her name the next day to Basil and she started responding to it instantly.
Sawyer immediately loved her. He thinks she is the funniest dog ever. He squeels when she walks into the room. He laughs and laughs at her while she plays or even just comes and sits by him. She loves water and bubbles so we'll take her outside and blow bubbles and she'll jump for them and he'll laugh and laugh and laugh. Same thing when we turn on the hose and spray her. She also tries to get into the bath with him. He loves it and tries to splash her...she loves it too...a little too much so she is no longer allowed in there while he is bathing.
When we first got her she had kennel cough and was coughing up stuff all over the house. I hated it...and wasn't too fond of her for it either. SHe also started showing a little aggression with Dosh, but that was quickly corrected and now they are best friends. She isn't sick anymore and that makes her so much more loveable which is good because Sawyer and Dosh would both be really really sad if we got rid of her. Her purpose is being served.
She has other positives too...she was already trained and she is a great gaurd dog!
Welcome to the family Basil!
