trapped

So, I know I haven't updated Sawyer's blog in quite a while and I have a lot I want to get to, BUT today I just had to share a quick story of our morning. Silly Sawyer's newest game is to crawl away really fast and hide in a room and close the door. So, I usually already have the most kid-unfriendly doors shut like Jake's office, studio and game room. My room is also closed since Jake sleeps in until around 12. As for bathrooms, I have them mostly child proofed and the toilet seats are generally closed. Well this morning Sawyer and I were in the basement playing. All dangerous doors were closed...or so I thought! Sawyer played in the family room for a while and then waved bye to me and crawled off down the hall and I wasn't worried in the slightest. I heard him crawl upstairs and shut the door at the top, which I hadn't shut before, and then heard him slide on his belly back down. Then he came clomping in the family room with a smile on his face and said "Hey!" Then off he went again. This time he headed for the bathroom. This time I really wasn't worried because all the cleaning chemicals were on the counter well out of his reach and then door to the toilet and tub was already closed. I could even see him for a minute until again, he closed the door. He was just happily playing in there on the floor rolling around his bottle of bubbles for about 15 minutes. Then he started shouting out "Hey!" Hey!" Hey!" So I knew he was sick of the bathroom. I got up and went to open the door and I couldn't open it more than a sliver. I squinted through the crack and noticed he had opened all the drawers on the side of the sink by the door, which made it impossible to open the door. I told him to stand up and shut them, but unfortunately he misunderstood me and shut the barely open cracked door. I reopened the door as best I could and told him again and again he shut the door. By this time he really really wanted out and was really mad I told him to shut the door. He shut it and then just started panicking and crying. For the next 15 minutes I brainstormed how to get my crying, hungry, scared little guy out of the bathroom. I looked around the room to try and find something to pry open the door far enough that I could somehow close the drawers myself. I found a barbie and tried that. Unfortunately for the barbie that idea amputated her leg. Unfortunately for me that idea was a crap idea and didn't even kind of work. So, I ran upstairs and found some needle nose pliers and a flat head screwdriver thinking I could wedge the screwdriver in and then close the door with the pliers. This also seemed like a crap idea. The flat head screwdriver didn't even fit in the slit in the door. I couldn't unhinge the door and just take it off because the hinges were on the inside with Sawyer. So, my next idea was to call my mom and see if she could come up with anything ingenious. She told me to go wake up Jake and have him try something and if he couldn't get Sawyer we would have to call 911 and have them come break down the door. She also started praying. I ran upstairs woke Jake up and he said, "K, I'm coming, run down there and be by Sawyer until I get there." When I got downstairs Sawyer was just hysterical beside himself that he was still in that stinking bathroom. I hear Jake coming down the stairs at the same time I hear Sawyer hitting the drawer. Extremely relieved that I didn't have to call 911, I opened the door about an inch and was able to finish closing the drawer and rescued my baby and Jake, very tired, went back upstairs to sleep.

  1. I don't mean to laugh, but really that made me laugh!! Aren't kids a grand adventure! I locked my kids in the car once when they were both really little. Thankfully I was able to convince them it was a game until my mom came with spare keys!
